What to Wear Camping: A Beginner's Layering Guide

You do not need to look like you're summiting Everest to sit around a campfire. But you do need to think in layers, because 'the weather at a campsite' is really three different weathers — hot afternoon, cool sunset, cold morning. Here's the simple version.

The 3-layer idea (it really is this simple)

Base layer: a t-shirt or long-sleeve against your skin. Mid layer: a fleece or light puffy for warmth. Outer layer: a rain jacket for wind and water. You mix and match through the day — hot afternoon = base only; chilly night = all three.

The one rule: no cotton (when it's cold)

Cotton is comfy — until it gets wet. Then it stays wet and steals your body heat. For cool-weather camping, wear synthetic (polyester) or wool for anything close to your skin. Cotton is totally fine for a warm summer day trip.

About footwear

For your first trip, closed-toe sneakers you already own are fine. You don't need hiking boots to walk from the car to the picnic table. If you're planning a real hike, then think about proper boots — but that's a different guide.

Layer up, keep cotton for the ride home, and remember: the point isn't to look like a pro. The point is to be warm enough to actually enjoy the sunset.
