The Complete Beginner Camping Checklist

Every camping checklist on the internet is 200 items long and includes things like 'satellite messenger' and 'trowel.' Relax. For a normal weekend at a normal campground, here's what you actually need — and, honestly, most of it you probably already own.

The 'you'll be miserable without it' list

Tent + rainfly. Sleeping bag rated to at least 10°F colder than the forecast low. A sleeping pad (this is the #1 thing beginners skip — the ground is cold and hard, and a pad fixes both). Headlamp. Water. Food. A way to cook it. Trash bags. That's it. Everything else is a nice-to-have.

The 'you'll be really glad you brought it' list

Camp chairs, a small folding table if the site doesn't have one, a lighter AND matches (you'll drop one in water — it's a rule), bug spray, sunscreen, a warm hat for sleeping, extra socks. A small tarp is magic — put it under your tent to keep the floor dry.

Things you can absolutely skip

A camping-specific coffee maker (a regular French press works). A dedicated 'camping knife' (your kitchen knife is fine). Freeze-dried backpacker meals (you're driving — bring real food). A hatchet, unless you know you'll need one.
